Redesign and Retrofit of Pearl Harbor Building 166 Photovoltaic System
Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
US Navy / Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI)
July 2018 - December 2018
Project Description:

The Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) operates a 40.5 KW Photovoltaic (PV) System installed at Building 166 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  Kalvio was selected as part of the team to redesign and retrofit the existing PV system to allow for advanced monitoring capabilities to be installed.

Kalvio redesigned the PV system and created engineering drawings for the proposed changes to allow for the installation of new monitoring equipment.  Working with NAVFAC Hawaii during the review process, Kalvio was able to incorporate all the latest 2017 NEC requirements into the retrofitted PV system.

The design included a custom built remote-control panel which allows for the automatic and simultaneous shutdown of three PV inverters based on the sensed condition of an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) at Electrical Substation G-15 at neighboring Building 165.  Kalvio was able to engineer this solution which automatically shuts down the entire PV system when Building 166 is operating on emergency generator power.
